STORY # 0030

I met TW online about two months ago.  He claimed that he was a business owner looking for a secretary and wondered if I would be interested.  His offer was considerably more money, so he had my attention.  After talking on the phone for hours, we seemed so compatible that he completely forgot his need for a secretary and decided that he needed me as his girlfriend - I sounded like everything he had always looked for and could not find.
He claimed to own a wholesale auto business and lived in an elite area.  He was anxious to meet me, so we set up a meeting in a public place.  We are both race fans, so we planned to meet at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri.  He is best friends with Kevin, a driver, and we would likely have pit passes - this sounded like an enjoyable evening.
When I arrived at the raceway, he did not meet me as planned, so I left.  My cell phone rang on the way home and it was him asking me to return - he had cold feet and chickened out, but promised if I would return, he would not let me down, so I returned, but he still did not meet me as planned.  A phone call the next day verified just how badly this poor guy had been burned before, and he was just afraid to enter into something that could potentially be serious.
However, we continued to get to know each other via the Internet, and frequent phone calls.  I never knew his phone number, but I am not real big on calling men, so the frequency of his calls was adequate enough that I never felt a need to ask for him number.
The following weekend, we had some plans and he stood me up again.  Used his same lame story - I thought we had worked this out, but I was obviously wrong -
Finally, he showed up at my door one day and we instantly clicked as we knew we would.  Now, things would be all better.  He met my son, came to his baseball games, met some of my friends, took me out to lunch and met my coworkers.  Then within a few weeks he had me convinced that we could work together and get along, so I should turn in my resignation letter at my current employer.
I turned in the letter on a Friday, then began driving straight to his house.  It would be the first time I had been to his house; he lived quite a distance from me and had been so kind to always make the effort to drive to me and spare me the drive, especially at night.  He had given me the house number and directions, but when I arrived to the subdivision, no such address existed.  Remember I told you I don't even have a phone number for this guy?  Well, I feel so stupid.  I start thinking about how well I really KNOW this man, and I call my office and ask them to disregard the resignation letter.
Then I started researching this guy.  He was nonexistent.  His business did not exist according to the city, his address did not exist according to county assessor, but when I confronted him, he denied any lies or misrepresentation.
I guess I wanted to see how this would all pan out, so I kept up the "relationship" until one day he slipped.  He referred to himself by another name.  I waited about 15 minutes, then asked him, "By the way, who is Scott?"  He looked at me as if I were the psycho, and told me I was hearing things.
Time for more research.  He had forwarded an email to me, so I inquired of the other mail recipients of his true identity and I heard from Robbie, a high school student and Scott's neighbor.  Scott lived with Linda, they are not married, but she has four children, and he warned me of getting involved with Scott.  I gave Robbie my phone number and he passed it along to Linda's older daughter.  The daughter called me that evening and told me that Scott is a pathological liar and he makes their lives miserable.  She claimed that he is unemployed most of the time.
I decided to allow Scott an opportunity to come clean on his own.  He did and he had explanations for all that I had been told, had heard, or had discovered on my own.  He was actually a very nice and seemingly normal guy; he just knew that I would not have taken an interest in him if I had known he was living with another woman.  So, I continued to speak to him and get to know him now as himself - Scott.  A few weeks later, he talked to my landlord and decided to move to my town so that we could be closer.  July 30, 2004, moving weekend has arrived, but he has not.  I received two emails from him regarding some complications too lengthy to go into at this time.  This morning he called and said he would be leaving in an hour with a load of his things.  I knew it was a lie.
I've learned some things about myself throughout this chain of events and I'm sure that I will now always have trust issues with men.  I don't think Scott will go away entirely - ever.  We were supposed to have a date last night - I knew it wouldn't happen, so I made plans with another guy.  Sure enough, he never even attempted to call me.
Truly, the man of my dreams had turned into the "Man of my Nightmares"
Lots of small detail was left out.  However, names were not changed to protect anybody, because everybody needs to know about existing psychos.
